Andy Crash Pulled of the Air of 929 WXMM Country - FIRED! @Andycrash

    Photo_on_2011-10-07_at_10

Yesterday at this time I received a phone call from my buddy @andycrash that just crushed me....

Let me rewind for a moment. Andy Crash was at one time the top country DJ in town. Vaulting his show on Y-100 was second largest country music morning audience in the state, second to WMIL-FM in the early late 90's. He left his radio gig with his family and moved to Texas. His one and only love was radio. He always wanted to get back into radio. Andy and I have been social media buddies for over the last 2 years and it seems like we have been life-long friends. When I received the call from him he was going to be back on the radio, I got teary knowing this was his dream. I was so excited!

Back to the phone call. He said "Tommy this is Andy and I'm not joking, WXMM let me go." I slumped in my chair just stunned.

How can this happen. What, Why...only after 3 weeks? Why would they hire this guy only to dump him after 3 weeks?

I was really so bummed. A genuine to-the-core stunned!

Late last night I received this email from Andy.

An interesting September for yours truly.  A new, local country station
hired me to be their music director and morning show host.  A few weeks ago
a dj in the market lost his night show job on a competing
country station.  They decided to hire him today and let me go back to
"whatever it is you used to do". :-)

[After talking to Andy voice, what he originally emailed is not the case, He was told that according to management, he was not fired to use his salary for a new morning show replacement.-Tommy]

Three week gig.  My shortest ever.

    That's radio.

The good news?  I will have more time now to answer your emails, calls, and
    social media posts!

Keep Katie, Ray-Ray, and me in your thoughts and prayers.  They are what
    really matters in my life!

What can A friend do? Well I wanted to voice my disapproval, in a respectful manner, to his bosses that we felt this move was shortsighted. So I posted this message on the 929 Country Facebook page.

    Woodward Communication and WXMM,

I am SO DISAPPOINTED to hear or not hear, depending on how you look at it, that Andy Austin Connell is no longer DJ'ing your morning show. As a life long Rock and Pop listener, the last 3 weeks have been an eye opener for me. I was a faithful 92.9 Country listener my drive to Green Bay each morning. Listening to Crash & Company in the morning started my day on such a high note. I was crushed to find out that he was let go after only 3 weeks on the air.

I feel this is a terrible decision and one that I just do not understand. How something so good and the dream of one person could be dashed in 3 weeks time. Why hire him at all just to give his spot to another suitor?

I wish you would reconsider your decision to replace him!

    WE LOVE CRASH!!!

    - Fellow Crash Supporters in Social Media

Well that's what i posted on the 929 Country FB page this morning before it was removed without comment. Sad way to handle things. I'm just so sad for him and his dream.

What can be done? Please call the main reception line at (920) 733-6639 and voice your disapproval. Please do not use bad language or tone.  Be kind and respectful and know the person you are talking to most likely has nothing to do with the action.

Kindly say its sad and you want Andy Crash back.

When I first found out that Andy was going back into radio I was so excited for him. He was keeping everything under wraps, so when the other DJ disappeared from the other country station we assumed that was where he was going. Only to find out he was helping start up a new station. I am not a country music radio person at all, but I listened in the morning only to hear Andy. I have unliked them on facebook and will take them off my radio. I will also tell all my country music friends whom I told to tune into the new station to go back to their old country music stations.

This is a true travesty. How can you as so-called 'UMANS" do something like that to somebody. Have him and his family move from TEXAS. Get a place in Wisconsin. He did all of the set-up work to get your radio station on the air and then after 3 weeks on the air YOU fire him because somebody else became available? If that's the kind of loyalty that Woodward Communications shows to their employees, I can only imagine what kind of loyalty they show to their listeners. I used to love listening to WAPL. I grew up listening to APL. All my friends listened to APL. but now, I will never listen to a Woodward Station again. That is a downright dirty and unmoral thing to do. HOW CAN YOU EVEN SLEEP AT NIGHT KNOWING YOU GOT RID OF THE BEST THING THAT EVER HAPPENED TO WOODWARD!

BY THE WAY, I REALLY HOPE I WIN THE TRIP TO SEE TAYLOR SWIFT SO THAT I CAN HAVE YOU register me for the airline and the hotel and then I can just stay home and know you wasted a lot of money!

Thank you for the comment and support. Out of fairness some of the things you said need clarification. First, Andy had been living in NE Wisc for well over a year if not 2 years. He did not move here to join Woodward. He moved here with the hopes of rejoining a station, but Woodward is not guilty of moving his family here.

Second don't win the trip and not take it, you are still liable for the taxes. If you win, go and have a ball...you will pay or it in the end regardless.

THANK YOU for the @andycrash love

The true tragedy here is that Country 92.9 FM did not embrace the passion and experience Crash has for radio and country music. Crash is the most knowledgeable person I've ever met when it comes to talking about traditional radio and what it does for music. There are, quite simply, certain things from old school music that work so well we cannot afford to be without them when it comes to music. Radio is one of them. Crash has endless and superior ideas about how to engage the listening audience that are far superior to what is happening in any kind of music promotion we see/hear today. Shooting for the stars, Crash is always thinking about how to make the experience cost effective and efficient.

The manner in which the suits at Country 92.9 went about a variety of things pertaining to the launch of a new country radio station left me cold. Firing an experienced jock and programmer right of the bat has left a chilling effect on those of us who know and love Crash and ultimately what he could do for the good of music.

To be brief and straight forward about this subject. Woodward showed some very poor management qualities if even half the reasons were correct. It shows me yet again that media companies fail to really get to know their listeners or listen to what they say.

Ultimately Woodward like so many other media outlets do not understand that radio is not benign to the social connections people make. In my opinion i will avoid interacting with Woodward stations in the future and keep supporting my friends in their future endeavors.

FYI: you could win the trip do the I am so glad I won Promo for when they call your name live on the air & then when it comes to the signing of the paper work say oh darn I can't go and not sign any of it or take the trip. I wrote the Legal Rules for a local TV station for many years. If you want to waste a bunch of managements & make the on air staff look like idiots just do that. they CAN"T hold you to the taxes if you don't sign the tax form they present you or give the airline your info to print the tickets. I had this happen CONSTANTLY when I ran the contests & trust me it was a pain to scramble for a another winner & to get the work done properly for that person to go on the trip.
